    Image-Enabled Discourse: Investigating the Creation of Visual Information as Communicative Practice

    Anyone who has clarified a thought or prompted a response during a conversation by drawing a picture has exploited the potential of image making as an interactive tool for conveying information. Images are increasingly ubiquitous in daily communication, in large part due to advances in visually enabled information and communication technologies (ICT), such as information visualization applications, image retrieval systems and visually enabled collaborative work tools. Human abilities to use images to communicate are however far more sophisticated and nuanced than these technologies currently support. In order to learn more about the practice of image making as a specialized form of information and communication behavior, this study examined face-to-face conversations involving the creation of ad hoc visualizations (i.e., napkin drawings ). A model of image-enabled discourse is introduced, which positions image making as a specialized form of communicative practice. Multimodal analysis of video-recorded conversations focused on identifying image-enabled communicative activities in terms of interactional sociolinguistic concepts of conversational involvement and coordination, specifically framing, footing and stance. The study shows that when drawing occurs in the context of an ongoing dialogue, the activity of visual representation performs key communicative tasks. Visualization is a form of social interaction that contributes to the maintenance of conversational involvement in ways that are not often evident in the image artifact. For example, drawing enables us to coordinate with each other, to introduce alternative perspectives into a conversation and even to temporarily suspend the primary thread of a discussion in order to explore a tangential thought. The study compares attributes of the image artifact with those of the activity of image making, described as a series of contrasting affordances. Visual information in complex systems is generally represented and managed based on the affordances of the artifact, neglecting to account for all that is communicated through the situated action of creating. These finding have heuristic and best-practice implications for a range of areas related to the design and evaluation of virtual collaboration environments, visual information extraction and retrieval systems, and data visualization tools

    A NASA study of the propulsion systems for possible low-risk replacements for the Space Shuttle is presented. Results of preliminary studies to define the USAF two-stage-to-orbit (TSTO) concept to deliver 10,000 pounds to low polar orbit are described. The booster engine module consists of an over/under turbine bypass engines/ramjet engine design for acceleration from takeoff to the staging point of Mach 6.5 and approximately 100,000 feet altitude.     The Double-edged Sword: A Mixed Methods Study of the Interplay between Bipolar Disorder and Technology Use

    Human behavior is increasingly reflected or acted out through technology. This is of particular salience when it comes to changes in behavior associated with serious mental illnesses including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Early detection is crucial for these conditions but presently very challenging to achieve. Potentially, characteristics of these conditions\u27 traits and symptoms, at both idiosyncratic and collective levels, may be detectable through technology use patterns. In bipolar disorder specifically, initial evidence associates changes in mood with changes in technology-mediated communication patterns. However much less is known about how people with bipolar disorder use technology more generally in their lives, how they view their technology use in relation to their illness, and, perhaps most crucially, the causal relationship (if any exists) between their technology use and their disease. To address these uncertainties, we conducted a survey of people with bipolar disorder (N = 84). Our results indicate that technology use varies markedly with changes in mood and that technology use broadly may have potential as an early warning signal of mood episodes. We also find that technology for many of these participants is a double-edged sword: acting as both a culprit that can trigger or exacerbate symptoms as well as a support mechanism for recovery. These findings have implications for the design of both early warning systems and technology-mediated interventions

    Sociomateriality in the sandbox: Visually oriented documenting practices of young entrepreneurs

    Entrepreneurs are important drivers of innovation. Their work is highly creative while also requiring a distinct paper trail for processes such as incorporation of a business, filing of patents, and management of shifting resources. In order for entrepreneurial team members to interact in productive and creative ways, they need to establish shared and stable frames of reference (i.e., actional field) to support collaborative decision-making and coordination. Documents play a central role in this process. The authors present an ethnographic study of 20 student start-up teams that explored the ways in which young entrepreneurs use documents of mixed materiality (both visual and text-based, analog and digital) to demarcate the actional field for their communicative activities. Many of the teams in this study were embarking on their first experience with the start-up process, providing an interesting opportunity to observe the sociomaterial relationship between their emergent communicative activities and documenting practices.published or submitted for publicationis peer reviewe

    Hall Effect of La2/3(Ca,Pb)1/3MnO3 Single Crystals near the Critical Temperature

    The Hall resistivity rho_{xy} of a La_{2/3}(Ca,Pb)_{1/3}MnO_3 single crystal has been measured as a function of temperature and field. The overall behavior is similar to that observed previously in thin-films. At 5 K, rho_{xy} is positive and linear in field, indicating that the anomalous contribution RSR_S is negligible. However, the effective carrier density in a free electron model is n_{eff}=2.4 holes/Mn, even larger than the 0.85-1.9 holes/Mn reported for thin-films and far larger than the 0.33 holes/Mn expected from the doping level. As temperature increases, a strong, negative contribution to rho_{xy} appears, that we ascribe to R_S. Using detailed magnetization data, we separate the ordinary (\propto B) and anomalous (\propto M) contributions. Below T_C, R_S \propto rho_{xx}, indicating that magnetic skew scattering is the dominant mechanism in the metallic ferromagnetic regime. At and above the resistivity-peak temperature, we find that rho_{xy}/rho_{xx}M is a constant, independent of temperature and field. This implies that the anomalous Hall coefficient is proportional to the magnetoresistance. A different explanation based on two fluid model is also presented.Comment: revtex, 11 pages, 4 figure

    Low-temperature electrical transport and double exchange in La(Pb,Ca)MnO

    The resistivity in the ferromagnetic state of flux-grown La_{2/3}(Pb,Ca)_{1/3}MnO_3 single crystals, measured in magnetic fields up to 7 T, reveals a strong quadratic temperature dependence at and above 50 K. At lower temperatures, this contribution drops precipitously leaving the resistivity essentially temperature independent below 20 K. The Seebeck coefficient also reflects a change of regime at the same temperature. We attribute this behavior to a cut-off of single magnon scattering processes at long wavelengths due to the polarized bands of a double-exchange ferromagnet.Comment: 10 pages, TeX, 4 figures.     Using Ethnography of Email to Understand Distributed Scientific Collaborations

    In this brief poster abstract we explore the finding from previous research that distributed teams collaborating on research use email to an overwhelming degree. This email is the source of collaboration and one of the central documents in the practice of doing science. We present an early idea of email focused ethnography and using visualizations to assist in the qualitative exploration of analyzing email communications. Of interest is the utility of different visualizations to inform follow up interviews of longitudinal fieldwork and data collection. Two such visualizations are presented and described. Along with the benefits of the techniques we describe some of the challenges.ye

    Observation of anomalous single-magnon scattering in half-metallic ferromagnets by chemical pressure control

    Temperature variation of resistivity and specific heat have been measured for prototypical half-metallic ferromagnets, R_0.6Sr_0.4MnO_3, with controlling the one-electron bandwidth W. We have found variation of the temperature scalings in the resistivity from T^2 (R = La, and Nd) to T^3 (R = Sm), and have interpreted the $T^3-law in terms of the anomalous single-magnon scattering (AMS) process in the half-metallic system.Comment: To appear in Phys.     Visualization Pedagogy in iSchools

    iSchools have been offering visualization courses and developing programs in data science. The practice of visualization requires expertise in a diverse range of skills including design, data curation and coding, all of which leverage iSchool strengths. Thus, iSchools have a unique opportunity to develop curricula suited for data scientists that leverage iSchool strengths. During this half day, fishbowl style workshop, conference goers interested in visualization education at information schools will be invited to explore themes related to the inclusion of information and data visualization coursework in iSchool data science curricula. Workshop organizers represent several diverse disciplines with interest in applied visualization practices and collectively have a range of experiences using visualizations in research and teaching visualization in the classroom.ye
